Supermalt is a much-loved, non-alcoholic malt drink that is a staple at any African or African Caribbean social gathering across the UK and beyond. Made with water, barley and hops, the process involves fermentation and brewing. Unlike beer making, Supermalt does not contain yeast, which is needed to create alcohol. So, the final drink remains non-alcoholic.
Supermalt was created in 1972. Originally drunk as a health drink by Nigerian soldiers, due to its high vitamin content, particularly vitamin B. These days, Supermalt is widely available in supermarkets and stores. It is now made in various flavours and in low sugar versions to cater for changing tastes.
