Maheu (also known as amahewu, mageu, madleke) is a traditional fermented drink originating from Zambia, and popular across Southern Africa.
Maheu is non-alcoholic, gluten-free, and dairy-free. Traditionally made with maize meal, sugar and water, maheu can also be made usung sorghum flour, or millet flour, or a combination.
Maheu is cheap and easy to make. Maizemeal, sugar and water are cooked together to thicken, then cool. Once cooled, more water is added and the mixture left to ferment for several days. It has a tangy, slightly nutty flavour, and is refreshing.
Maheu is also easy to digest, due to the fermentation process, and is rich in probiotics. Maheu is available to buy readymade. We bought our maheu online, and seeing how easy it is to make, we will definitely try making some.
