Brixton Market means many things to many people. Arriving in London from Ghana in the 1960s, my parents were regular users of Brixton Market. Its cultural diversity and tropical foods provided a much-needed sense of home. Decades later, Brixton Market is embedded into the daily rhythm of my own life. It has provided the lifeblood of the Fermenting Cultures initiative, allowing us to source and celebrate fermented foods of the African diaspora from here in south London.
Brixton Market is under threat again from property developers. Other historical street markets across London (Latin Elephant, Ridley Road Market, Shepherd's Bush Market) face similar threats.
Street markets provide London’s working class and ethnically diverse communities with access to affordable, healthy, culturally relevant food. They help give us autonomy over our diets as an essential alternative to supermarkets. They provide vital spaces of connection. Their loss would be a disaster for London.
Please support the Brixton Traders & Community Association Buy Back Brixton Campaign, which aims to purchase Brixton Market, bringing it into community ownership. Support sister campaigns to save London’s street markets. ✊✊✊
